Poetic Terms That Start with the Letter L


Lay - A long narrative poem sung by medieval minstrels called trouveres. Limerick - A light, humorous poem consisting of lines composed in anapests and using a simple rhyme scheme: aabba.

Litotes - A figure of speech where the negation of a negative comment affirms its positive opposite.
Example: It’s not a big deal.

Lyric - A poem which expresses complex thoughts or feelings from the point of view of a specific speaker. The lyric has its origins in ancient Greece where the poet reciting the form was accompanied by the lyre.
