Poetic Terms That Start with the Letter H


Haiku - A Japanese form composed of three lines of unrhymed verse. The first line consists of five mora, the second line of seven mora and the third line of five mora. English haiku writers have usually referred to the moraes as syllables. Most haiku reflects on some aspect of nature.

Heptameter - A line of poetry with seven metrical feet.

Heroic couplet - One of the many ancient poetry terms still in varied use today, a heroic couplet is a couplet written in iambic pentameter.

Hexameter - A line of poetry consisting of six metrical feet.

Hyperbole - A deliberate exaggeration used to emphasize a point. One of the mosts overused of poetry terms.
Example: "Daddy Warbucks is as rich as a ton of chocolate."
